Do we opt out on the Golden Rule too?

O.k. it's been so long since I've posted that I really should be posting about all the happenings of our family but, I couldn't resist weighing into the big controversy of the hour. I am not a Democrat but, I have to say how embarrassed I am about many "conservative's" reaction to the President's speech to the schools. I was apalled at the lack of respect shown to the President of the United States. My opinion is even if we don't agree with what our President says we should show respect for the office he holds and tolerance to what he has to say,for certainly we would want someone to show us the same if we were in that position. Anyone heard of the "Golden Rule" or do we "opt out" of that too? I always like to look at how the leaders of our Church handle differences. Would they not even listen to others? Or if we remember correctly one actually has said we look for our commonalities to build upon and go from there with those that don't share our same beliefs. I love that thought and I definetly want my own child to take full advantage of being a student and be the best she can be (in Pres. Obama's speech)which also includes tolerance for others and yes, even the golden rule. I would love anyone and invite everyone who wants to talk to her about that very subject to come on over. So,thanks Pres. Obama for wanting my child to do her best in school, work hard and take responsibility for her own destiny that is a commonality we both have!

You are right Kim. Everyone got all in a frenzy about the speech without even knowing what he was going to say. After reading it last night we decided he had a lot of great things to say and we wanted Parker to hear them so he heard it and came home and had a lot of positive things to say about it. Anyone who wants to tell kids to work hard and stay in school is a good thing!

I loved our conversation today! I too loved the message and am so glad that you posted this. I don't see what the big deal was anyway. I think that parents, students, and teachers needed to listen!

That is the kind of speech every president should give at the beginning of each school year. The controversy came when there was a list of questions the kids would be required to answer about how they could help Obama further his political life. I'm glad they took it out and made the speech more educational rather than political. But our school didn't show it. The teachers were busy teaching curriculum.

I take that back. My 4th grader didn't see it but my 2nd grader did.

Amen to that.

I think society tends to blow many things out of proportion. It is sad how we treat others as a whole. Many times I have to catch myself from the things that annoy me in others. Glad you were able to have an open mind when it came to this.
